Firefighters work at a site of a Russian military strike, amid Russia's attack on Ukraine, in the village of Hroza, in Kharkiv region, Ukraine October 5, 2023. The attack was the deadliest in the Kharkiv region since Russia's invasion more than 19 months ago, a spokesperson for the Kharkiv regional military administration told Ukrainian public broadcaster Suspilne. It also appeared to be one of the biggest civilian death tolls in any single Russian strike since the start of the war. UKRAINIAN OFFICIAL CONDEMN ATTACKKlymenko cited preliminary information that he said showed the attack was carried out with an Iskander ballistic missile. He said the strike was clearly very targeted and that Ukrainian security services had launched an investigation into the matter.

Ukrainian forces retook it in a lightning counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region last September. But since then, Russian forces have constantly pounded the area with artillery, making it practically impossible to go back to everyday life. Farther south, in the eastern Donetsk region, Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday that five people died in Russian strikes. The prosecutor’s office of the Donetsk region said on Telegram that Russian forces had most likely used cluster munitions in their attack. Both Russia and Ukraine have used the controversial weapons, which are known to cause indiscriminate harm to civilians.

Regional authorities announced a mandatory evacuation of civilians from near the Kupiansk front earlier this month due to daily Russian shelling. At 1:20 p.m., the second shelling of the city center injured three civilian men, including an emergency medical assistant, and a 20-year-old woman. Russia denies deliberately targeting civilians in its invasion of Ukraine, which has killed thousands, uprooted millions, and destroyed cities. Ukraine announced a mandatory evacuation of towns and villages under its control in the northeast. It's a sign Ukraine may be losing ground there, as Ukraine also reports shelling and a bomb attack. But Ukraine says it's stopping Russian advances in the area, as it continues its counteroffensive. The Kupiansk city military administration announced on Thursday a mandatory evacuation of towns and villages near the combat zone, citing shelling and the security situation in the area. The evacuation applies to almost 12,000 civilians from 37 towns and villages in the Kupiansk district, the Associated Press reported.

REUTERS/Clodagh KilcoyneKVIV/MOSCOW, Dec 26 (Reuters) - Russian forces bombarded scores of towns in Ukraine on Christmas Day as Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was open to negotiations, a stance Washington has dismissed as posturing because of continued Russian attacks. Ukraine has traditionally not celebrated Christmas on Dec. 25, but Jan. 7, the same as Russia. That range reaches deep into neighbours of Belarus: Ukraine and NATO member Poland, which has very strained relations with Minsk. The S-400 system is a Russian mobile, surface-to-air missile (SAM) interception system capable of engaging aircraft, UAVs, cruise missiles, and has a terminal ballistic missile defence capability. Blasts were heard at Russia's Engels air base, hundreds of kilometres (miles) from the Ukraine frontlines, Ukrainian and Russian media reported on Monday.
